What is a VPN?
A VPN wraps your internet traffic in an encrypted tunnel to a server we run, then sends it on from there. Here is what that does and does not mean.
What it does
- Hides what you do online from the network you are on, whether that is your ISP, a hotel or a café
- Replaces your public IP address with the server's address
- Encrypts DNS so the names of sites you visit are private too
- Lets you appear to be in another country
What it does not do
- It does not make you anonymous to sites you log in to
- It does not stop malware or phishing
- It does not replace HTTPS, it adds a layer under it
- It cannot speed up a slow home connection
Why trust matters
A VPN moves visibility from your ISP to the VPN provider. That only helps if the provider keeps nothing. That is why our no-logs policy is a precise list rather than a slogan.
